PORTFOLIO OVERVIEW & TIPS

What is a portfolio?

Your portfolio is a first impression of you and your work. An effective portfolio is presented professionally and cleanly, it is well organized, and a level of care has gone into the selection of the work. Portfolio pieces can be done digitally: 3D models, sculptures, animations, designs, digital paintings, concepts, etc. Portfolios may also contain work using natural media, like pencil and paper, ink, watercolour paints, etc. Choose work that best represents you, your personality, your strengths, and your creative career ambitions! When crafting your portfolio, have a goal in mind:

  • Are you trying to get into a specific college or program? Show a variety of work and your process!

  • Are you seeking a specific job or career path? Try to cater the work to the skills listed on a job posting!

  • Are you looking to improve? Be sure to show off ways youโ€™re challenging yourself!

eFFECTIVE wAYS OF PRESENTING YOUR WORK

  • A portfolio website (or Artstation, Behance, etc.)

  • A printed portfolio in a presentation folder or binder

  • A multi-page PDF of your work

  • A sketchbook

  • A video demo reel

Additional Tips

  • Avoid relying on your phone to show the work

  • Avoid touring reviewers through random and unorganized images on your phone

  • An iPad or tablet is a great tool for showing off digital portfolios

  • Organize your work into a folder or a multi-page PDF
